Building Cross-Country Hours: Routes from KDTO
Proven cross-country routes from Denton Enterprise Airport for time building and the commercial XC requirement.
Denton Enterprise Airport (KDTO) sits in the sweet spot for time building — Class D tower, fuel, multiple practice destinations within an hour, and longer commercial-qualifying XCs in every direction.
Short XC (25-75 NM): Pattern work and confidence
KGLE — Gainesville Municipal · 23 NM N · Non-towered, long runway, $1.50 over-cost self-serve avgas. Good first XC after the endorsement.
KGYI — North Texas Regional / Perrin · 38 NM NE · Towered, two runways, restaurant on field. Great for radio work practice and a proper $100 hamburger.
KXBP — Bridgeport Municipal · 29 NM W · Non-towered, quiet. Good for practice approaches and a quick fuel stop.
3T0 — Cedar Mills · 64 NM NE on Lake Texoma · Grass strip, scenic. Sport pilot eligible. Lake views are unreal.
Medium XC (75-150 NM): Building XC time
KTYR — Tyler Pounds Regional · 116 NM SE · Class D, towered. Beautiful flight over East Texas pines. Good lunch options.
KSPS — Wichita Falls / Sheppard AFB · 95 NM NW · Joint civilian/military, towered. Excellent ATC practice in a busier environment.
KLAW — Lawton-Fort Sill Regional · 116 NM NW · Class D, restaurant. Crosses into Oklahoma — different ATIS, different feel.
Commercial-qualifying long XC (>150 NM, 3 landings, 1 leg >50 NM)
The classic commercial XC requirement is satisfied by a triangle. From KDTO:
Route A: KDTO -> KSPS -> KLAW -> KDTO · 95 + 35 + 116 = 246 NM, 3 landings, two legs >50 NM. About 3 hours of XC time in a Jabiru at 120 kt.
Route B: KDTO -> KTYR -> KGGG (Longview) -> KDTO · 116 + 32 + 142 = 290 NM, three airports across East Texas. ~3.5 hours.
Route C: KDTO -> KADS (Addison) -> KGYI -> KDTO · short legs but tower experience at three different airports.
Planning checklist
- File a VFR flight plan even when you don't have to — practice is free
- Weight and balance per leg, especially with full fuel and a passenger
- Fuel reservation at unfamiliar airports
- Brief alternates and divert plan
- TFRs (Sheppard AFB and Sherman/Denison area frequently have them)
What KDTO-based flying gives you
Wide-open North Texas airspace, predictable weather, and a tower that knows you. After 250 hours flying these routes you'll be a better PIC than someone who logged twice that doing $100 hamburger laps to the same airport.
