MOSAIC Timeline: When the Rule Takes Effect

Effective dates for the FAA MOSAIC rule — sport pilot privilege expansions, airworthiness changes, and manufacturer compliance.

MOSAIC is not a single switch-flipping event. It has a phased rollout that affects sport pilots, aircraft owners, and manufacturers on different dates.

    Effective date

The FAA's final MOSAIC rule was published in the Federal Register and is effective in 2026. The exact effective date for sport pilot privilege changes and the various airworthiness changes is in the FAA's published rule.

    The phases

Phase 1: Sport pilot privilege expansion (effective at rule publication)

    • Sport pilots gain access to aircraft that meet new performance-based criteria
    • No new training required for the expanded privileges, but each aircraft still requires the normal aircraft-specific checkout
    • Driver's license medical continues to apply

Phase 2: Airworthiness changes for new-build LSA (manufacturers' compliance period)

    • Manufacturers can certify new aircraft to the expanded LSA standard
    • Existing LSA airworthiness certificates are grandfathered
    • New designs benefit from the broader envelope (4 seats, retract, more HP, higher Vs1)

    Phase 3: Existing aircraft reclassification

    • Some aircraft (e.g., Cessna 150/152) become sport pilot eligible automatically based on their original certification falling within the new MOSAIC envelope
    • No paperwork required by the owner — the eligibility is determined by the aircraft's specs versus the rule

What this means month by month

    • Today through end of 2026: Sport pilots already have expanded privileges per the rule. Verify each aircraft's spec against the new criteria.
    • 2027-2028: Expect rental clubs and schools to add MOSAIC-eligible aircraft. Insurance markets will adapt.
    • 2028+: New aircraft designs specifically for the expanded MOSAIC envelope hit the market. The "sport pilot fleet" expands meaningfully.

    What you should do today

    1. Get the sport pilot certificate if you've been on the fence
    2. Verify the aircraft you want to fly meets MOSAIC criteria
    3. Plan training in modern LSA that already qualifies — that's the cheapest path

A4 trains and operates in aircraft that qualify under both the old rule and MOSAIC. There is no "wait and see" — start flying now.
