Renting LSA in DFW: What to Know Before You Book
Checklist for renting Light Sport Aircraft in DFW — insurance, checkout, currency, and how A4 works.
Renting Light Sport in Dallas-Fort Worth is harder than it should be — most rental lines are 172s. Here is what to expect when you finally find LSA, and what A4's process looks like.
What you need to rent LSA at A4
- Sport pilot certificate (or higher)
- Government-issued ID
- Last 3 logbook pages or a digital logbook export
- Renter's insurance (we'll point you to AOPA or Avemco; ~$300/yr)
- Aircraft-specific checkout flight (1-2 hours)
We do not require a primary flight training history with us — most of our members come from elsewhere.
The checkout flight
A4's checkout is straightforward and not a hazing ritual:
- Ground brief: aircraft systems, normal/emergency procedures, performance numbers, fuel/oil specifics
- Preflight together
- Pattern work: 3-5 takeoffs and landings to standard
- Slow flight and stalls
- Steep turns
- Simulated engine out
- Crosswind landing if conditions allow
- Debrief
Plan 2.0 Hobbs hours. If you've never flown a Jabiru, expect to use most of it. If you have, often 1.0-1.5.
Currency requirements
- BFR current
- 3 takeoffs and landings in category/class in last 90 days (for passenger carrying)
- A4-specific 90-day fly requirement to avoid re-checkout
Booking and scheduling
A4 uses Flight Circle. Members can book any aircraft they're checked out in, anytime, with no special permission for off-airport flights, overnight trips, or extended trips (within reason — long trips need a heads-up so we can manage maintenance scheduling).
